What are pellets and where
do they come from?
Pellets are the waste materials from trees
otherwise know as sawdust and ground wood chips. Resins
and binders occurring naturally in the sawdust hold the
wood pellets together, so they contain no additives, therefore
they "burn clean". Pellet mills across North America
produce over 600,000 tons of pellet fuel per year. They
are available for purchase at stove dealers like us, building
supply stores, feed stores and some discount stores. We
sell pellets by the forty-pound bag or by the ton, which
is fifty of the forty pound, bags.
What are some of the advantages in using
pellets?
The first appeal is their convenience.
Bags of pellets stack compactly and store easily and a ton
of pellets can be stored in a four feet wide, long and high,
about half the size of a cord of wood. Another advantage
is optimum burn efficiency. The small size of pellets allows
for precisely regulated fuel feed. The environmental benefits
besides clean burn is that pellets are a by-product not
a primary user and reduce the costs and problems of waste
disposal Pellets stoves do not require a chimney. Pellet
stoves can be vented directly to an outside wall or they
can go directly into an existing chimney or fireplace providing
the venting complies with local coeds. You can heat a whole
home with a pellet stove. In an average 1500 – 2000
sq. ft. home at an average temperature you can heat your
home with 3 tons for approximately $550.00 a year and typically
only need to be fill the stove with pellets once a day.
What happens when
the electricity goes out?
There is a battery backup that can be
purchased that will operate the stove for up to 8 hours
before it needs to be recharges.
Where do I get pellets?
Pellet fuel is widely available. Over
70 pellet manufacturers across the U.S. and Canada produce
a high-quality premium-grade fuel. We also sell the pellets
at both our Rutland and Londonderry locations and you can
either pick them up yourself or request a delivery by us.
What are the maintenance requirements?
Like any heating appliance, pellet
stoves need some maintenance for efficient and safe operation.
Most of the time this includes simply emptying the ash pan
and vacuuming the appliance once or twice a week, depending
upon the model and how often you use the stove. We also
offer a yearly cleaning and maintenance service that can
be preformed before the heating service or after at a minimal
cost.
